Whiskey Jax – Pretty Damn Good! 12/11/14

2

A friend of mine got invited to try out Whiskey Jax and asked me to join him. I accepted the challenge and the countdown started. Whiskey Jax is located on Baymeadows Road across from Native Sun. We were greeted by the Manager and the head chef. We talked it over and decided to go with chef’s choice dining, let the feast begin!

Nasty Sauce – Our bartender recommended their house-made hot sauce. He told us that this is the head chef’s secret recipe. I literally put this on ever single dish. Explosive flavor with a lil kick at the end. At the end of the night the chef told us that there was Jalapenos and Wasabi in it. We recommended that he bottle and sell it and also advise his staff to recommend it as well!

Avocado Fries –

Fresh Avocado slices coated in Cornflake Panko, lightly fried and served with Cilantro Lime Crème Fraîche and Citrus Thai Chili sauce. First of all, I love Guacamole/Avocado. I thought the batter took away from the Avocado, we spoke to the chef afterwards and we talked about going with a light batter. This dish def has a lot of potential. I topped it with some of that “Nasty Sauce” and I was happy!

Whiskey Jax Steak Tacos- Jim Beam and Coca Cola marinated skirt steak grilled with chimichurri sauce, goat cheese, and arugula. What is chimichurri you ask?  Chimichurri or chimmichurri is a green sauce used for grilled meat, originally from Argentina. It is based on finely-chopped parsley, minced garlic, olive oil, oregano, and white or red wine vinegar. The Chimichurri took it the next level for me. The steak was juicy, tender, and not at all chewy. Arugula is a nice touch and a good change from your normal lettuce or cabbage. The goat cheese as well, usually you see a store bought looking shredded cheese. The goat cheese added a nice creamy texture to the taco.  I thought about only eating half because I knew there was a on of food coming, but I literally inhaled it. You couldn’t taste the Jim Beam or Coca Cola marinade at all. The chef said that it’s mainly used for the char on the outside of the steak. Add more of that Jim Beam chef!

So good!

Bangin Shrimp – Jumbo Shrimp lightly fried in crispy Cornflake Panko and tossed in our Bangin Thai Chili Sauce

Man this Shrimp was bangin for real! I destroyed 4 of these real quick and made sure that the survivors made it to my to go box. I wasn’t sure at 1st if it was peeled already, but it was. You just had to remove the tail. I have had the Bang Bang Shrimp from Bonefish Grill and also at Papi Chulos and Whiskey Jax gives them a run for their money. I couldn’t stop thinking about these shrimp in a taco. They do offer it in Taco form and I highly recommend it!

Bourbon Salmon – Pan seared Atlantic Salmon with Martha’s mix seasoning, finished with an Angels Envy Bourbon glaze. Served with Roasted Fingerling Potato Medley and Seasonal Vegetables. When I think about salmon the skin is always the star of the show, unfortunately the skin was burnt black on this piece. The potatoes were good but I think they would be much better if you chopped them thinner. They were about ROLO candy size, I would say go half that. I’m not sure what the greens were cooked in but I didn’t like it.

Short Ribs – Braised with Cabernet, Mushrooms, Tomatoes, Root Vegetables, and Gravy over Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes. This was the sexiest dish of the night! I loved the presentation, The modern shaped bowl, the sprig of Rosemary and the colors. The went to cut the Short Rib and it just fell apart. The carrots were perfectly cooked. I could push the carrot to the roof of my mouth and it broke apart perfectly, not to firm and not too soggy. I been telling myself to eat more veggies and this is the way to do it! The chef said they cook it for 4 hours and we recommended adding a lil more Cabernet wine to that broth. Besides the Steak Tacos this my favorite dish.

whiskey-11

Fireball Apple Cobbler- Apple Cobbler with a Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey infusion. Topped with a Fried Ice Cream a la mode and Cinnamon Toast Crunch. If your going to use the Cinnamon Toast Crunch to batter the ice cream, I say batter the shit out of it! So much that you cant even see the Ice Cream, we wanted MORE! I like bigger pieces of apple in my dessert and I think they should make it a Fireball Apple Pie with Fried Ice Cream on top. My body was yearning for that Apple Pie crust.

In conclusion, Whiskey Jax surprised me! I would definitely recommend WJ. The prices and portions are more than reasonable. I saw Shrimp and Grits on the Brunch menu for $12. The chef said he had the hook-up on local shrimp. I got a lil time for that. The brunch menu is very attractive especially the $7 Lemon Blueberry Pancakes-Pancakes made with fresh Blueberries and Lemon Zest, finished with Fresh Berries, Grande Marnier, Whip Cream and Maple Syrup. MmMMmM I need that in and around my mouth! $8 for Chicken and Waffles tell me where you can get that at that price! Whiskey Jax when you read this, I’d like to host a Brunch event very soon. The main menu has some other cool items I’d like to try like the Lobster Egg Rolls, The Espresso Coffee rubbed USDA NY Strip topped with Espresso Mushroom demi-glace, and The massive Kentucky Fire Pork Chop that we saw a customer get and it’s only $15 this thing was massive! Also, the Chicken and Pear-Grilled chicken breast with Applewood Smoked Bacon, Brie Cheese, Cinnamon Whiskey Poached Pears, and Peppercorn Aioli on a Pretzel Bun…tell me that doesn’t make your mouth water! I would give WJ a solid 4/5 stars. They just opened, they are working out the kinks, revamping the menu, but it definitely headed in the right direction. On a side note, I was so focused on the food, I didn’t even try any fancy alcohol! Next time it is. Thank you WJ and Chef “Red” for the hospitality and thank you again to my friend for the invite, I really appreciate it!
